Since the first French door refrigerators hit the market in 2005, the new design’s notoriety has been soaring. French door refrigerators are now rapidly gaining popularity and respect among homeowners all over the world.

This massive success is mainly due to the innovative design that put the pull-out freezer below the dual side by side doors from which the design has taken its name. By uniting the capacity of Bottom Freezer Refrigerators with the Side by Side models’ divided door design, this highly space efficient configuration gave birth to such advanced features as the in-door filtered water dispenser and icemaker.

Although the demand for French Door Refrigerators is still on the rise (partly due to the recent increase in customer demand for Bottom Freezer Refrigerators), French Door Refrigerators are still manufactured in relatively small numbers compared to the more traditional-looking fridges.

The following table provides a brief comparision of the different models:

<dir></dir><dir></dir>

Model Type

Model description

Advantages and disadvantages

Top Freezer Refrigerators

Freezer is mounted in top of the refrigerator.

Usually smaller and cheaper than other models but harder to access items in the back of the freezer.

Bottom Freezer Refrigerators

The refrigerator section is mounted on top of the freezer.

Easy to access fresh food but the pull-over drawer slightly restricts your freedom to move. More expensive than Top Freezer Refrigerators yet usually have lesser capacity.

Side By Side Refrigerators

The refrigerator and the freezer are next to each other

Easier to see and access the content of the freezer but fitting in wide items is more difficult due to the decrease of horizontal dimension. Slight increase in capacity compared to Bottom Freezer Models.

French Door Refrigerators

Refrigerator is mounted above the pull-out freezer section.

The design of separately opening doors slightly decrease energy cost but the pull-out freezer design forces you to be more organized.

Compact Refrigerators

Being fit into smaller spaces, these models are also called as counter height or dorm fridge refrigerators.

Ideal for smaller places but also comes with limited capacity and with or without a freezer.

Built-In Refrigerators

The refrigerator is built-into the kitchen cabinetry.

Has an elegan, integrated design but usually a lot more more expensive as well and quite difficult to replace.

Get the largest unit that will comfortably fit your space. Shop with a tape measure, and consider height, width, depth and door swing clearance.

Look for a convenient interior layout. A refrigerator should have the ability to store wide and/or tall items and should have no hard-to-reach or hidden spots.

Shelves should be sturdy, flexible and easy to clean. Glass is generally better. Some glass shelves have a raised, sealed rim to stop spills from dripping over. Adjustable shelves are a plus — some models have half-shelves that can be matched up for a wide, flat surface or adjusted separately for odd-height items. Other models have elevator shelves that crank up or down. A few models have a wine rack.

Look for easy-to-reach temperature and humidity controls. Controls should be up front rather than on the back inside wall, where you have to empty a shelf to adjust them. Nice extras include humidity-controlled vegetable crispers and temperature-controlled meat and deli drawers.

The interior should be well lit. Most models have a light inside the refrigerator compartment; some have additional lights in the freezer or produce bins.

The refrigerator should be relatively quiet. Look for insulation to help dampen the sound of the compressor.

Electronic touchpads are easier to use. Many models now have digital controls and displays which show the actual temperature of the various areas and compartments of the refrigerators.

2. Buy a refrigerator that has the Energy Star certificate, this will definitely save you money on electricity.

3. Do you have 2 fridges in your home because you have lots of food to store, consider purchasing a newer, larger fridge to store all your food in one place. This will once again save you money on your monthly electrical bill.

4. If you’re shopping around for a new fridge consider buying an manual defrost model, they use 33% less engery than automatic defrost versions.

4. Another energy conservation tip is to, keep the refrigerator temperature between 36-38° F, you don’t need it any colder than that. The colder it is, the more electricity it takes to run it.

5. Don’t stuff your fridge, for the most efficient results, fridges work best when not jam packed with food.

6. Don’t put your fridge in direct sunlight or sources of heat if possible.

Industry-First Technology and Unique Dispensers Lead French-Door Refrigerator Offerings at 2007 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show

LAS VEGAS, May 8, 2007 — Further expanding the industry’s most extensive line-up of French-door refrigerators, LG Electronics is introducing an innovative vertical ice and water dispenser model that provides increased functionality and the beauty of stainless steel. This premium bottom-freezer model will be showcased as a highlight of LG’s broad lineup of refrigerator-freezers at the 2007 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, May 8-10 (Booth C3713).

The enhanced line of LG PanoramaTM French-door refrigerators delivers enhanced functionality and convenience to consumers. All told, the company unveiled 10 French-door models for 2007 — in various sizes and price points, bringing luxury to the mainstream and meeting a wider range of consumer needs.

“French-door is the fastest growing refrigerator segment,” said John Herrington, president of LG Electronics USA, Inc., Digital Appliances. “Our 2007 Panorama French-door models underscore our commitment to delivering technologically-advanced features coupled with a stylish design to provide consumers with a premium product.”

UNIQUE VERTICAL ICE AND WATER DISPENSER

Another industry-first in the French-door category is LG’s introduction of a Panorama refrigerator model with a unique, stylish vertical ice and water dispenser, one of the industry’s tallest. The dispenser measures 11-plus inches high to accommodate extra-tall bottles, large pitchers and coffee pots. This model is part of LG’s next-generation kitchen series and is available with 25 cubic-foot capacity in a standard depth or 21 cubic-foot capacity in a counter depth for a built-in look.

The model also has a unique auto-closing door feature. The doors close automatically, assisted by hydraulic hinges, once the door is at a 45-degree angle. The auto-closing doors provide peace of mind, since consumers never have to worry about the doors not sealing completely.

LG was the first company to unveil new technology in French-door refrigerators that placed the icemaker within the refrigerator door — compared to most three-door models that place the icemaker in the freezer compartment located at the bottom of the unit. This configuration also allows consumers to take advantage of increased refrigeration space and the convenient storage capabilities of a bottom-mount freezer, in addition to the filtered ice and water access that side-by-side refrigerator owners have long enjoyed.

LG continues to deliver the broadest array of French-door refrigerator offerings in the U.S. market including multiple sizes at a variety of options, allowing more consumers to enjoy the benefits of three door refrigerators. New additions in 2007 will include an exclusive 20 cubic-foot model with a narrow width of 30 inches.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCE AND DESIGN FEATURES

With the symmetrical contoured doors, hidden hinges and curved handles, the LG Panorama French-door refrigerators are a welcome, stylish addition to any type of kitchen. The Panorama refrigerator with the vertical ice and water dispenser features a new white LCD display, while the other units in the line incorporate LED displays.

The LG refrigerators include slide-out split shelves, the BioShield™ anti-bacterial gasket, two-piece utility bin, wine rack and adjustable gallon size shelves in right door. In addition, an OptiBin™ Crisper controls the moisture levels for fruits and vegetables to help keep produce fresh, longer. The door of the drawer-style freezer also tilts for easier access, giving way to a fuller and wider upper freezer basket.

Panorama French-door refrigerators feature LG’s exclusive multi-air flow cooling mechanism in which all refrigerator shelves are outfitted with venting ducts for optimal cavity cooling and food freshness — and an IcePlusTM system that helps make ice faster. In addition, digital temperature controls are positioned on the outside of the unit, which are easy to reach and adjust, and can be locked to prevent unwanted changes.

• LG Panorama refrigerator with vertical dispenser will be available in the second quarter of 2007 in a stainless steel finish at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $3,399 for standard depth model LFX25980 and $3,699 for counter depth model LFX21980.

• The LG Panorama with external ice and water dispenser (Model: LFX25960) is available now in a variety of finishes including smooth white, smooth black, titanium and stainless steel, with manufacturer’s suggested retail prices ranging from $2,399 to $2,799.
